Discover the City of Joy, Kolkata
Formerly known as Calcutta, Kolkata city is one of West Bengal state’s most prominent cities! This bustling metropolis has been titled India’s “City of Joy”, for many reasons, one of the major ones being its friendly locals, who are said to be warm, hospitable and welcoming in nature.
In terms of its geography, this city can be divided into 5 major regions, where the central and northern regions attract the highest number of tourists, as they are home to a number of historical landmarks, affordable eateries and colorful local markets. To make your days in this city truly unforgettable, you’ll be stopping at these stunning attractions:
Take a Holy Dip at the Sacred Gangasagar
Located around 130-140 kilometers south of Kolkata city, Gangasagar is a renowned pilgrimage site located on Sagar Island. Being the converging point of the sacred Ganga river and Bay of Bengal, this destination is especially packed around Magh Sankranti, as taking a dip at Sagar during this time is believed to bring “moksha” (liberation from the continuous cycle of rebirth).
Hindu devotees also visit this destination to perform pinda daan (funeral and ancestor worship), where families offer various food items to their deceased family members so they’re able to attain peace and salvation in the afterlife.
To get the best experience, you can also take a dip on its shore, perform puja rituals and offer flowers, oil lamps and sweets to Goddess Ganga.
Seek Spiritual Peace at Kapil Muni Temple
After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere of Gangasagar, you’ll head to Kapil Muni Temple, dedicated to Kapil Muni (a renowned sage), situated a few kilometers away. Consisting of three shikharas (towers), this temple is colored using a mix of white, red and yellow, like most Hindu temples in India.
The garbha griha (inner sanctum) houses the idol of Sage Muni, who is said to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu and worshipped by the priests of the temples. Furthermore, there are also smaller shrines devoted to Hindu deities like Lord Ram, Lakshman and Hanuman situated near the temple complex as well.
Experience the Divine Energy of Kalighat Kali Temple
Then, proceed to Kalighat Kali Temple, one of the sacred shakti peethas sites in India. Established using traditional Bengali architecture, this temple consists of many prominent attractions like mandapams (halls), kunds (tanks) and the garbha griha (inner sanctum), where you’ll see devotees worshipping Goddess Kali and offering gratitude and prayers.
Witness the Spiritual Harmony of Belur Math
Next, explore Belur Math, a sacred ashram/temple founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897. Following a blend of Hindu, Islamic and Christian architectural styles, this destination has been functioning as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission and has been working for many humanitarian purposes, serving many people in need in Kolkata.
Also, visit Dakshineswar Kali Temple, established to honor Goddess Kali. Built in the 19th century, this destination is located on the eastern side of the Hooghly River. Additionally, the temple conducts various religious ceremonies starting with the Mangal Aarti done in the early morning hours followed by the Bhog ritual and finally ending with the evening puja.

A major highlight of the temple is definitely the idols of Lord Jagannath (Lord Krishna’s form), Balabhadra (his brother) and Goddess Subhadra (his sister) kept in the garbha griha (inner sanctum) made out of wood from neem trees. Decorated with colorful garlands, clothing and jewellery, the idols are replaced during auspicious years in the Hindu calendar by the priests of the temple.

Stroll Along the Golden Shores of Chandrabhaga Beach
The first attraction that you’ll be stopping at in Konark is Chandrabhaga Beach, which features golden sand and deep blue waters. In Hindu mythology, this beach was believed to have been the site where Lord Krishna’s son Sambha prayed to Surya, the sun god, to cure his leprosy.
This beach attracts the highest number of visitors during the Chandrabhaga Mela organized to pay respects to Surya. Dip your toes in its refreshing waters or go on a gentle walk along the beach shore or appreciate the waves crashing against the shoreline; the choice is yours!
Marvel at the Architectural Grandeur of Konark Sun Temple
Another of Konark’s top destinations is the Konark Sun Temple constructed during the 13th century. Built using the Kalinga architectural style, this destination was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
The temple is meant to resemble a chariot for Surya (the sun god) and showcases several wheels, stone sculptures and horses. Additionally, the walls of the temple are also decorated with various carvings of mythological creatures and religious figures.
Next, explore the Chhaitana Stone Carving Village, an artistic village where you’ll be able to see local artisans chiseling blocks of sandstone into various sculptures relating to Hindu religious figures and mythological creatures.
Uncover Ancient Legends at Khandagiri and Udayagiri Cave Hills
Next, explore the Khandagiri & Udayagiri Cave Hills, estimated to have been built around the 2nd century under the ruling of King Kharavela. In the past, both hills used to have 100+ caves combined but in the present time, only 33 caves have survived so far, out of which 18 are in Udayagiri Hill, whereas the remaining 15 are in Khandagiri.
