See the Majestic 46 Meter Avukana Buddha Statue
Begin your tour by visiting the historic Avukana Buddha Statue situated near Kekirawa, located in the Anuradhapura district. Constructed during the 5th century during the ruling of King Dhatusena, the statue is believed to have been carved out of a single granite boulder.
Standing at a height of (around) 46 ft, including the lotus pedestal located at the base, the statue strikes a samabhanga pose that symbolizes peace, equilibrium and serenity in the Buddhist religion. To make the most out of your visit here, you can seek blessings, say your prayers and leave lotus flowers at the base of this sculpture.
Conquer Sigiriya Rock Fortress
After your visit to the Avukana Buddha Statue, you’ll be touring the renowned Sigiriya Rock Fortress (also known as Lion Rock) that was established during the rule of King Kasyapa when he chose Sigiriya as his new capital.
Made popular through various social media platforms, the rock fortress is an unmissable spot when visiting Sri Lanka. In regard to its layout, this destination is divided into 2 major areas, which are the royal gardens (at the base level) and the ancient ruins of the palace (at the summit).
A few major highlights of the fortress include the mirror wall, lion’s paw, colorful frescoes, boulder gardens and ruins of the ancient palace that you can take a look at during your sightseeing tour. As the fort sits at an elevation of 1144 feet above sea level, you’ll have to climb more than 1200 plus steps to reach the peak, so we recommend you wear comfortable shoes so that you can walk easily during your tour here.
Travel Back to the Past at the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Park
Following this, make your way to Polonnaruwa Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Polonnaruwa City. Being one of Sri Lanka’s most famous ancient sites, this city was declared the capital from the 11th to the 13th century after Anuradhapura was destroyed in 993 AD.
Home to various stupas, royal palaces, relic houses and Buddha statues, a few top must see attractions that you should explore include the Gal Vihara, Lankatilaka temple, audience hall, Pabalu Vehera (temple of marbles) and Rankot Vihara (stupa), which will help you learn about this city’s thriving historical legacy and colorful traditions.
Step Inside the Historic Dambulla Cave Temple
The Dambulla Cave Temple is another top attraction for history lovers in Sri Lanka. Also called the Golden Rock temple, this destination consists of 5 major caves, which all differ in terms of their layout and architecture.
Tracing back its history, the caves served as the hiding place for King Valagamba (Vattagamani Abhaya) during attacks and later, the king transformed the caves into a temple site as a form of gratitude. If you’re looking to learn about Buddhism, then this attraction can definitely help you learn the religion, as the five caves here feature various religious artifacts ranging from writings to frescoes, murals and art pieces.
A few must see spots here include Cave 1 (also called cave of the Divine King) that showcases a 14 meter long reclining statue of Buddha. Likewise, Cave 2 (also known as Maharaja Lena) is renowned for its many Buddha statues along with sculptures of royal kings and local gods.
Climb More Than 5000 Steps and Reach Adam’s Peak
Another destination covered on this tour is Adam’s Peak, a sacred mountain located in the central highlands. Also known as Sri Pada, the summit is best known for housing the sacred footprint of Buddha, although various religions have their own beliefs and interpretations (like for instance, Hindus believe it belongs to Lord Shiva whereas Christians consider it to be Adam’s).
Situated at 2243 meters from sea level, the peak requires one to climb more than 5000 steps, which can take 3-4 hours to complete depending upon one’s walking pace, stamina and crowd. Many pilgrims also typically start the climb around 2 at night so that they’re able to see the sunrise from the summit, which is said to be absolutely enchanting!
Although you'll not be able to see the footprint as it’s carved onto a stone slab and kept in the inner shrine room, you can pay your respects from the outside. Feel free to light butter lamps, ring bells and seek blessings from the guardian deity Saman (Sumana Saman) to whom the shrine is dedicated, as these activities will help you fully soak in this destination’s spiritual atmosphere. Likewise, during clear weather, you’ll also get to witness nearby lush green hills and tea estates from the summit!
Followed by Nine Arches Bridge
Constructed during the British colonial period, the Nine Arches Bridge is one of Sri Lanka’s true architectural masterpieces. Also known as the “bridge in the sky,” this monument is made entirely out of materials like rocks, bricks and cement, and no steel was used due to its unavailability.
Standing at a height of around 24 meters, you’ll get to see the bridge features nine scenic arches, which are set against dense jungles and misty mountains. If luck is on your side, you’ll also witness those old style classical trains passing through the bridge as well.
Feel the Spiritual Atmosphere of Mahamevnawa Monastery
To make your tour more fruitful, you’ll also visit the Mahanewa Buddhist monastery (also known as the Kumbalwela Monastery), which was founded in 1999 to spread Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
Being Kumbalwela’s central hub for spirituality and meditation, this monastery's major landmarks include a main relic stupa along with other small stupas, a sacred Bodhi tree, an incense stand, open air meditation pavilions and two bookstores, among others.
While sightseeing, you’ll also see colorful wood carvings of local deities placed outside that certainly add a more vibrant atmosphere. Additionally, this destination also serves as the residential home for monks residing in Kumbalwela.
After this, explore the Kataragama Kirivehera Temple, which was constructed during the 3rd century and is considered to be one of the sixteen “solosmasthana” (sacred Buddhist pilgrimage spots) in Sri Lanka. The main highlight is the white colored stupa measuring 29 meters that you can walk clockwise around, as this is believed to bring positive energy and remove negative karma from one’s life.
Similarly, the temple complex is also home to many other smaller shrines and temples dedicated to local deities where you can offer prayers.
Tour Colombo’s Most Historical Temples
Lastly, on the tour, you’ll stop by Colombo’s ancient spots like Gangaramaya and Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, which are both dedicated to Gautam Buddha.
The Gangaramaya temple, formed in the 19th century, features various key landmarks like the Bodhi tree, Seema Malaka shrine, relic chamber, Vihara temple, a museum and a library, among others.
The relic chamber is where you’ll find a wide collection of Buddha statues of various sizes along with mural paintings, bone fragments of Buddha and ancient manuscripts. Finally, stop by Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, believed to be the spot where Buddha preached his sermons when he visited Sri Lanka for the third and last time.
A few major highlights can be seen inside the image house of the temple, like the beautifully decorated frescoes with depictions of Buddha’s life along with his reclining statue. Furthermore, this destination also conducts many religious programs and festivals, with one of them being the Kelaniya Perahera, which is attended by many Buddhist devotees each year.
